“This elegant sedan was once owned by none other than the once-celebrated Ritz Brothers comedy trio.”
Classic car enthusiasts will appreciate this extraordinary find – a 1959 Mercedes-Benz adenauer that led an incredible, star-studded life. This elegant sedan was once owned by none other than the once-celebrated Ritz Brothers comedy trio.
The car’s history starts in 1959 when it was first purchased by Harry Ritz of the famed Ritz Brothers vaudeville act. The brothers were a beloved comedy team known for their zany antics and impressive physical comedy and dance routines, seen in films such as Argentine Nights and Hit the Deck. After the Harry’s ownership, the Mercedes passed through the hands of notable Hollywood figures like actress Nina Foch and actor Andre Phillipe.
The car was rescued from obscurity in 1975 by Sanders Rendel, a friend of the Ritz Brothers who recognized its significance. Rendel kept the Mercedes running for several more years before carefully storing it away, where it has rested since his passing in 2008.
Thanks to Rendel’s nephew Dov, a prized piece of automotive and entertainment history has resurfaced. As Dov explains, his uncle’s friend Charles was a very close friend of Sanders when he was alive and actually remembers riding in the car. Stories of the vehicle’s lineage come from him.
