But what about that intriguing detail: Coachwork by Fisher? For isn’t it the car’s immaculately gorgeous coachwork that first draws you to it?
Well, the Fisher Body Company was founded in Detroit on July 22 1908, with the intention of coachbuilding for automobiles alone. This was a hugely significant step, both for the individuals involved and as a marker for the future. For until now these family members had been busy producing bodies for horse-drawn carriages – which at first had been their main line – as well as several automakers.

But they had woken up to the coming demands of the twentieth century: they realised that when it came to automobiles, stronger and more durable bodies – rather than those traditionally used for horse-drawn carriages – were urgently needed to better withstand the increased vibrations and speeds of that new mode of transportation. This was an almost cosmic shift – from a practical reality came a vision of the future. For back in 1880 in Norwalk, Ohio, the Fisher Brothers Carriage Company had been set up by Lawrence Fisher to produce horse-drawn vehicles.
All seven of Lawrence Fisher’s sons spent at least a few years working for their father’s carriage business. In addition, Lawrence Fisher taught his brother Albert how to make carriages. And during the late 1880s, Albert Fisher made his way to Detroit and established Standard Wagon Works there.
By 1908, Lawrence Fisher’s sons Fred and Charles were working for Albert at Standard Wagon Works to help produce bodies for horse-drawn carriages as well as several automakers.
And it was then and there that the lightbulb went on in the minds of both brothers: horse-drawn carriages did not belong in twentieth century America.

Their abundant future lay before them, in the Fisher Body Company. As it did for the makers of our 1911 Cadillac Model 30 Limousine.
The Cadillac car company as we know it was formed from the remnants of the Henry Ford Company, which ran from only 1901 to 1902 when there was a dispute between Ford and his investors.
Along with several of his key partners, Henry Ford left the business in March 1902. Accordingly Ford’s former financial backers, William Murphy and Lemuel Bowen, then called in engineer Henry M Leland of Leland & Faulconer Manufacturing Company to appraise the plant and equipment in preparation for liquidating the company’s assets.
But instead Leland, working with his partner Robert Faulconer, persuaded the pair to continue manufacturing automobiles using Leland’s proven single-cylinder engine. And so the Cadillac Automobile Company was established on August 22, 1902, taking over the Henry Ford Company factory at Cass Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Detroit.
Cadillac, whose early vehicles were identical in design to those of Ford’s later Ford Motor Company except for the engine, would develop a reputation for precision engineering. Henry Ford, of course, would go on to other large matters.
By the time General Motors purchased the company in 1909, Cadillac had already established itself as one of America’s premier luxury car makers.
The complete interchangeability of its precision parts had allowed it to lay the foundation for assembly lines and the modern mass production of automobiles.
It was at the forefront of technological advances, introducing full electrical systems, the clashless (don’t mention this to Joe Strummer!) manual transmission and the steel roof.

The brand developed three engines, with its V8 setting the standard for the American automotive industry.
Cadillac had the first U.S. car to win the Royal Automobile Club of the United Kingdom’s Dewar Trophy by successfully demonstrating the interchangeability of its component parts during a reliability test in 1908; this spawned the firm’s slogan ‘Standard of the World.’
And this is the very world-beating standard displayed here at Beverly Hills Car Club in our 1911 Cadillac Model 30 Limousine.
Check it out now: you won’t be disappointed.
