Car Tales: Northern Grit, Porsche 993 Carrera 4S

If the Carrera 2 and 4 had turned around the core Porsche customers during the recession of the early 1990s and got them buying again, then the new Carrera – identified both internally at Porsche and externally as the 993 – re-invented the concept of the 911 and opened up an entirely new market. From the moment of launch in late 1993, the factory struggled to keep up with demand.

From the moment of launch in late 1993, the factory struggled to keep up with demand.

Essentially the Porsche 993 is the fourth generation of the Porsche 911 model sports car that was manufactured and sold between January 1994 and early 1998 (model years 1995–1998 in the United States), replacing the 964.

There was now dynamism in the development of the 911 that had not been seen since the progress of the early cars in the late 1960s and early 1970s. And the 993, the car thrusting forward this new Porsche surge, made every earlier 911 look positively dated.

The external design of the Porsche 993 was penned by English designer Tony Hatter and retained the basic body shell architecture of the 964 and earlier 911 models, but with revised exterior panels with much more flared wheel arches, a smoother front and rear bumper design, an enlarged retractable rear wing, & teardrop mirrors.

Hatter had conceived a new visual interpretation of the 911, upgrading the lines.

Tony Hatter is originally from Yorkshire, in the north of England. Born in Newcastle, he studied at Harrogate College of Further Education. As a child in Northern England, he collected Dinky toys and Korgi die-cast miniature cars and would peruse the new car brochures that his father brought home.

In the 1960s, he was brought to the exciting Harewood hillclimb event near Harrogate and then began to read various automotive publications such as his favourite, Popular Hot Rodding, where he discovered Peter Stevens’s illustrations and would do his best to emulate them. And he became influenced towards Porsches by going in 1971 to nearby Leeds to watch the Le Mans film starring Steve McQueen.

‘The ultimate car guy movie,’ he said. He found himself particularly drawn to race cars, and distinctly remembers having loved the 906 Carrera 6 for its styling and proportions.

Tony Hatter then enrolled in a course at Lanchester Polytechnic, in the Midlands city of Coventry, on a course called ‘Industrial Design (Transport)’. (Clearly Lanchester was a creative hub – Jerry Dammers, the inventor of the 2-Tone ska music movement, was also a student there; as was Pauline Black, OBE, who formed the allied Selecter group.) It was his Lanchester course which showed Tony that there was a future in designing cars.

After completing his course at Lanchester, Tony went to London’s Royal College of Art where he truly discovered design and styling on a course sponsored initially by Chrysler. For a couple of semesters he worked in a design studio:

‘At first I didn’t realize people drew cars for a living. No one at school tells you that.’

Tony Hatter took his first design job at Opel, before moving to Porsche’s style department in 1986. Hatter worked along with his up-and-coming peers Harm Lagaay and Freeman Thomas to put a mark on several iterations of Porsche’s sports car design. Eventually becoming part of Porsche’s executive team as Design Manager, he is credited with designing the 993 (along with Harm Lagaay), and the third generation Porsche Cayman, as well as working on numerous cars including the Porsche 911 GT1.

He was instrumental in adapting both the exterior and interior designs of the Porsche Carrera GT concept car, which was originally a modified Porsche 986 frame, into the production trim guise. Additionally, he served as Design Manager for the RSR version of the Porsche 918, and more recently designed the 50th Anniversary and GT3 Touring editions of the Porsche 911.

At Beverly Hills Car Club right now we have a splendid example of Tony Hatter’s master craftsmanship, a true piece of art, a 1998 Porsche 993 Carrera 4S featured with only 70,974 miles on the odometer. Finished in its captivating factory color Ocean Blue Metallic (E1) complemented with a grey interior. This exceptional vehicle represents the final iteration of the air-cooled 911s, making it a highly sought-after model among Porsche enthusiasts and collectors alike.

I recently attended a private event at the Mike Malamut vintage car museum in Ventura County. There’s a large collection of classic Porches there. I enjoy the Cartales Alex. I believe I’m going to have to get me a Porsche! Johnny

  • Tom H. says:

I have the same car but with 80,000 miles, but it’s only the rear wheel drive not 4 wheel drive Targa. More as a matter of interest, could you indicate the price you are asking for this car? Thank you.
