Car Tales: Machinery To Make Out To, Little Red Corvette

Little Red Corvette is that song that made Prince a star.
Released in 1983 as a single from the album 1999, it’s a breathless ode to casual sex that gave him his first US top 10 hit in 1983 and introduced him to the mainstream.

The song was his biggest hit at the time, and his first to reach the top 10 in the US, peaking at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. It was also his first single to perform better on the pop chart than the R&B chart.

If Prince was still around I can guarantee you that he would be on the phone for this car right now.

In the song Prince narrates his experience of a one-night stand with a beautiful but promiscuous woman: she is the ‘Little Red Corvette’ of the song’s title. Although Prince has a great experience with her, he urges her to ‘slow down’, to ‘find a love that’s gonna last.’ Otherwise, he worries, she will destroy herself. And, amidst other automobile metaphors, he compares their lovemaking to a ride in a limousine. And, in one way or another, he is trying to help her: A body like yours oughta be in jail/Cause it’s on the verge of bein’ obscene/Move over, baby, gimme the keys/I’m gonna try to tame your little red love machine.

A 12″ dance remix of the song was released to accompany the single, and it continues where the album version fades out. The US single was originally released with the album track ‘All the Critics Love U in New York’ as the B-side.

The single was released with another 1999 track, ‘Let’s Pretend We’re Married’.

On Prince’s 2006 compilation album, Ultimate, the dance remix of ‘Little Red Corvette’ was a featured track.

Following Prince’s death in April 2016, the song re-charted on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at number 29. It rose to number 20 one week later.

It has sold 1.08 million digital copies in the United States.

But as I have discussed before, there is some question as to whether the vehicle in Prince’s mind really is a Little Red Corvette?
Once upon a time Prince’s former keyboards player Lisa Coleman spilt the beans: ‘Prince was always borrowing my car because it was awesome. It was a ’64 Mercury Montclair, pink and white, and it was just the perfect cruise-mobile on a beautiful day in Minneapolis.

He actually put a couple of dents in it, because it was so big. He’d come up to me and mumble, “Hey Lisa, sorry about your car.”

So I’d run out to inspect the damage and there’d be a little dent with some yellow paint from a pole he’d reversed into, and I’d go, “Damn it. Watch where you’re going!”’

Was it true, Lisa, that Prince wrote Little Red Corvette while he was sleeping in the back of your Mercury Montclair?

‘Well… I guess. He was “sleeping” with someone we knew called Denise Matthews [aka Vanity] and she was “sleeping” in the back of the car, too. I even found some of her hair wrapped around the handle that winds the window down.’

‘So I imagine they were making out, or doing whatever, in the back seat and they probably had a wonderful moment of afterglow, which is when he got the seed of the idea…’
‘But it’s not a red Corvette, it’s a pink Mercury!’
